Peri-implantitis is infection and bone loss around an existing dental implant. Symptoms include redness and swelling around the implant, bleeding when brushing near the implant, the implant feeling loose, persistent bad taste or odor, and visible bone loss on X-rays.
If caught early, a failing implant can often be saved. If ignored, the bone loss progresses until the implant must be removed entirely.

The laser is more effective than traditional mechanical cleaning because it can reach microscopic surface textures on the implant where bacteria hide.
